Details of 100 million Facebook users published online
Users' personal information cannot now be made private, security consultant says
|
The personal details of 100 million Facebook users have been collected and published online in a downloadable file, meaning they will now be unable to make their publicly available information private.
|
However, Facebook downplayed the issue, saying that no private data had been compromised. |
The information was posted by Ron Bowes, an online security consultant, on the Internet site Pirate Bay. |
Bowes used code to scan the 500 million Facebook profiles for information not hidden by privacy settings. The resulting file, which allows people to perform searches of various different types, has been downloaded by several thousand people. |
This means that if any of those on the list decide to change their privacy settings on Facebook, Bowes and those who have the file will still be able to access information that was public when it was compiled. |
Bowes’ actions also mean people who had set their privacy settings so their names did not appear in Facebook’s search system can now be found if they were friends with anyone whose name was searchable. |

there she blows..yet another one! Louisiana well emitting oil, gas after vessel strike |
July 27, 2010 10:25 p.m. EDT |
New Orleans, Louisiana (CNN) -- A towing vessel struck an oil well in the Barataria Waterway off the southeastern Louisiana coast on Tuesday, causing the well to emit oil and natural gas into Barataria Bay, the Coast Guard said in a news release. |
Retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the government's point man for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, said there was a sheen around the platform, and vapor that's probably a combination of gas and water was emanating from the well, called C-117. |
Kyle Plotkin, a spokesman for Gov. Bobby Jindal, described the well as "orphaned." He said it had been owned by Cedyco Corp. of Houston but was declared abandoned by the state in November 2008. |
Plotkin said the state does not own the well and added that the designation does not absolve Cedyco of responsibility for the well. |
The tug vessel Pere Ana C was pushing the dredge barge Captain Buford Berry when it hit the wellhead, the Coast Guard said. |
Jindal and Coast Guard Rear Adm. Paul Zukunft, the federal on-scene coordinator for the Gulf spill, and other officials surveyed the damage by helicopter, according to a statement from the governor's office. |
"The Coast Guard's overflight this morning confirmed the pipeline/well-head is discharging a mist of orange and brown oil about 100 feet in air," Jindal said. "This is the same thing we viewed on our flight to the well today. The Coast Guard does not have a specific flow rate for the well determined yet, although there have been early reports that there is natural gas and mud mixed in with oil coming from the well." |
However, Roberts said he doesn't "expect it is going to be a huge problem to contain it or cap" the leak, because "it isn't uncommon." |
Video: A new leak in the Gulf?
"The Coast Guard's overflight this morning confirmed the pipeline/well-head is discharging a mist of orange and brown oil about 100 feet in air," Jindal said. "This is the same thing we viewed on our flight to the well today. The Coast Guard does not have a specific flow rate for the well determined yet, although there have been early reports that there is natural gas and mud mixed in with oil coming from the well." |
Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts said that while oil was gushing from the well in 6 feet of water, it was too dangerous to get close enough to estimate how much oil was leaking out. Read more at www.cnn.com |

US ship aimed at running Gaza blockade named after Obama’s book.
Talkbacks (27)
An initiative is under way to add an American ship to the effort to break the
IDF blockade of Gaza.
The vessel, to be named The Audacity of Hope after
US President Barack Obama’s best-selling book, is being organized by an American
group called “US Boat to Gaza.” It is expected to sail in the fall.
The
links to Obama do not end there. Prof. Rashid Khalidi, director of the Middle
East Institute at Columbia University’s School of International and Public
Affairs, and a friend from Obama’s time in Chicago, is among the supporters of
an appeal launched by the group last week.
“We must raise at least
$370,000 in the next month,” a statement on US Boat to Gaza’s Web site
read.
“These funds will be used to purchase a boat large enough for 40-60
people, secure a crew, and cover the licensing and registering of the
boat...
together we will contribute to the great effort to end the
blockade of Gaza and the illegal occupation of Palestine.”
The
Lebanese-Saudi Arabian- Palestinian-American Khalidi, an outspoken critic of
Israel, garnered attention in 2008 when his friendship with Obama became a point
of controversy during the US presidential campaign. Sen.
John McCain,
Obama’s opponent, portrayed Khalidi as a Hamas sympathizer.
Khalidi’s
involvement in this new project is already a popular topic among
rightwing
bloggers and media personalities in America.
“Hamas is the Muslim
Brotherhood’s Palestinian arm.
Rashid Khalidi has now signed an appeal
for funds to outfit another ship like the peace flotilla that would try
to break
Israeli’s blockage of Gaza, the territory controlled by Hamas,” American
pundit
Glenn Beck said on his syndicated radio show last week.
“Rashid Khalidi,
a good friend of the president. The name of the ship: The Audacity of
Hope.”
Others supporters of US Boat to Gaza include author Alice Walker,
activist Angela Davis, and Cindy and Craig Corrie, the parents of
International
Solidarity Movement activist Rachel Corrie, who was killed by an IDF
bulldozer
in Rafah in 2003.
While Khalidi will help raise money for the initiative,
he said he does not plan to sail on the ship.
Khalidi wrote in an e-mail
over the weekend that while he had not known that Obama’s book would be
the
inspiration for the ship’s name when he signed on as a sponsor, he does
not view
it as a potential embarrassment for Obama.
“But if the name is a problem
for the administration, it can simply insist publicly that Israel lift
the
siege: end of problem, end of embarrassment,” Khalidi wrote in the
e-mail. “That
of course would require it to respond to the systematic mendacity of
those in
Congress and elsewhere who support the siege, and indeed whatever else
the
Israeli government does.” Read more at www.jpost.com |
Power outages hit Mid-Atlantic after storm; 4 dead |
WASHINGTON – It could take days to restore power to hundreds of thousands of people around Washington after a storm downed power lines and trees and left four people dead, officials said Monday. |
The Sunday storm brought cooler weather to the Mid-Atlantic region, which has been through a nearly two-week heat wave, but also left widespread damage in Washington and its suburbs. |
Power outages affected more than 430,000 customers. Officials said they hadn't seen a similar outage since Hurricane Isabel in 2003. |
Regional utility Pepco reported late Monday that more than 203,000 customers were without power in Washington and neighboring Maryland counties. The widespread damage made it unclear when most would be restored, spokesman Bob Hainey said. Major power lines were down, electric poles were broken, and numerous transformers were damaged. |
Other electric companies in the region predicted power would be mostly restored by Monday or Tuesday night. |
Four deaths in the region were blamed on the storm. |
Officials say 63-year-old Warren Douglas Smith died after encountering severe winds and choppy seas on the Chesapeake Bay while trying to return to land on personal watercraft. |
In Beltsville, Md., a tree crushed a minivan, killing 44-year-old driver Michelle Humanick and injuring her passenger. |
In Virginia, a 6-year-old boy also died after a tree fell on him while he was walking with his family. In Pennsylvania, police say a 53-year-old woman was apparently electrocuted by a fallen power line in her back yard. |
Even as cleanup was going on, the power outages were causing disruptions. Numerous traffic signals were out. In Fairfax County, firefighters responded to 22 fires in the storm's aftermath, and nine car accidents were blamed on the storm. In Prince George's County, Md., darkened traffic signals caused about a dozen accidents. |
In Washington, officials said there were more than 270 reports of damage from fallen trees or limbs. Fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said about half a dozen homes were significantly damaged by falling limbs. Three cars caught fire as a result of downed power lines. |
Mike Allen, 22, was in the attic of his mother's home in Washington when he heard a loud boom. A three-story tall tree had fallen, uprooting a power pole, blocking the home's front entrance and cracking an attic wall. |
"There are a lot of streets in the neighborhood where a similar thing has happened," he said. "It's pretty wacky." |
Bethesda, Md., resident Mei Zhang initially enjoyed looking at the storm before her power went out. |
"The storm hit. The trees were swirling. It was an incredible show outside my window ... It reminded me of 'Wizard of Oz,'" she said. |
Officials warned residents of downed lines. Baltimore Gas & Electric said about 18,000 customers were without service late Monday, down from 112,000. The majority were expected to have power by Tuesday evening. Dominion Virginia Power reported 3,300 customers without power, down from 94,000. Most of those should have power Monday night. |
The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said the storm also cut off power at its filtration plant that provides water for nearly 2 million people in suburban Maryland. Mandatory restrictions on water use were lifted late Monday after power was restored. |
Finally some possible good news in the political arena! This is an incredible article that shows some real hope!
Sources say smackdown of Obama by Supreme Court may be inevitable
|
Ever since Obama assumed the office of President, critics have hammered him on a number of Constitutional issues. Critics have complained that much if not all of Obama's major initiatives run headlong into Constitutional roadblocks on the power of the federal government. |
Obama certainly did not help himself in the eyes of the Court when he used the venue of the State of the Union address early in the year to publicly flog the Court over its ruling that the First Amendment grants the right to various organizations to run political ads during the time of an election. |
As it has turned out, this was a watershed moment in the relationship between the executive and the judicial branches of the federal government. Obama publicly declared war on the court, even as he blatantly continued to propose legislation that flies in the face of every known Constitutional principle upon which this nation has stood for over 200 years. |
Obama has even identified Chief Justice John Roberts as his number one enemy, that is, apart from Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. And it is no accident that the one swing-vote on the court, Justice Anthony Kennedy, stated recently that he has no intention of retiring until 'Obama is gone.' |
Apparently, the Court has had enough. |
The Roberts Court has signaled, in a very subtle manner, of course, that it intends to address the issues about which Obama critics have been screaming to high heaven. A ruling against Obama on any one of these important issues could potentially cripple the Administration. |
Such a thing would be long overdue. |
First, there is ObamaCare, which violates the Constitutional principle barring the federal government from forcing citizens to purchase something. And no, this is not the same thing as states requiring drivers to purchase car insurance, as some of the intellectually-impaired claim. The Constitution limits FEDERAL government, not state governments, from such things, and further, not everyone has to drive, and thus, a citizen could opt not to purchase car insurance by simply deciding not to drive a vehicle. |
In the ObamaCare world, however, no citizen can 'opt out.' |
Second, sources state that the Roberts court has quietly accepted information concerning discrepancies in Obama's history that raise serious questions about his eligibility for the office of President. The charge goes far beyond the birth certificate issue. This information involves possible fraudulent use of a Social Security number in Connecticut, while Obama was a high school student in Hawaii. And that is only the tip of the iceberg. |
Third, several cases involving possible criminal activity, conflicts of interest, and pay-for-play cronyism could potentially land many Administration officials, if not the President himself, in hot water with the Court. Frankly, in the years this writer has observed politics, nothing comes close to comparing with the rampant corruption of this Administration, not even during the Nixon years. Nixon and the Watergate conspirators look like choirboys compared to the jokers that populate this Administration. |
In addition, the Court will eventually be forced to rule on the dreadful decision of the Obama DOJ to sue the state of Arizona. That, too, could send the Obama doctrine of open borders to an early grave, given that the Administration refuses to enforce federal law on illegal aliens. |
A whistle-blower who resigned from the DOJ is now charging Holder with the deliberate refusal to pursue cases against Blacks, particularly those who are involved in radical hate-groups, such as the New Black Panthers, who have been caught on tape calling for the murder of white people and their babies. |
This one is a biggie that could send the entire Administration crumbling--that is, if the Justices have the guts to draw a line in the sand at the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. |

I am sure more will surface but for gold monitoring to be in there...was that bill not so much about health?! | Gold Coin Sellers Angered by New Tax Law |
Amendment Slipped Into Health Care Legislation Would Track, Tax Coin and Bullion Transactions
|
Those already outraged by the president's health care legislation now have a new bone of contention -- a scarcely noticed tack-on provision to the law that puts gold coin buyers and sellers under closer government scrutiny.
|
The issue is rising to the fore just as gold coin dealers are attracting attention over sales tactics.

Section 9006 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will amend the Internal Revenue Code to expand the scope of Form 1099. Currently, 1099 forms are used to track and report the miscellaneous income associated with services rendered by independent contractors or self-employed individuals.

Wow! I have stopped drinking sodas for health reasons but now I think I will not touch a Coca-Cola product..and there are many of them..including orange juice! Coca-Cola accused of using porn to target children on Facebook |
Coca-Cola has been forced to pull an internet campaign after parents accused
the company of using hardcore pornographic references to target children on
Facebook.
|
A Facebook promotion for Dr Pepper, part of the Coca-Cola drinks range, posted
a reference to a notorious pornographic film on the “wall” of an underage
girl.
|
As part of the promotion, users allowed the company to hijack their Facebook
status box, posting apparently embarrassing messages under their names.
|
More than 160,000 people signed up for the hoax statuses, which included:
“Lost my special blankie. How will I go sleepies?” and “What’s wrong with
peeing in the shower?”
|
But the marketing drive backfired when a parent complained that her
14-year-old daughter’s hijacked status claimed that she had watched a
hardcore pornographic film which is notorious for the obscene practices it
depicts.
|
The status referred to the film by name, and the mother said she was
particularly distressed after finding that her daughter had subsequently
searched for it on the internet.
|
She said Coca-Cola had “offensively” offered to compensate her with a night in
a hotel and West End theatre tickets, adding: “Fat lot of use to me, we live
in Glasgow”.
|
Other Mumsnet users reacted furiously to news of the “disgusting” promotion,
and praised Mrs Rickman for bringing it to light.
|
Coca-Cola has since apologised and announced an investigation into its
promotion procedures. Executives said they had approved the offending
message without realising its true meaning.
|
A spokesman said: "It has been brought to our attention that the Dr
Pepper promotion on Facebook posted an offensive status update. We apologise
for any offence caused.
|
"As soon as we became aware of this, we took immediate action and removed
the status update from the application. We have also taken the decision to
end the promotion. We will take all steps necessary to ensure this does not
happen again".
